Hey Kids . . .

This page is for you!

air pollutionHave you noticed any air pollution where you live?  Do you have your head in the smog?  Did you know that air pollution makes it hard for some people to breathe?  Do you know why?

Air pollution is made up of tiny bits of dust in the air called particles.  Even though we can't see these particles we still suck them into our lungs when we breathe.  These little particles come from air pollution, dust, and pollen.

But even when you are inside, you are not safe from these tiny particles.  Air pollution isn't just outside: It's inside too.  In fact, the air in your home has probably twice as many particles in the air, than the air outdoors.  This is because there is no wind inside to blow the particles away.

What Happens When You Breathe Tiny Particles?

Take a deep breath.

Feel your lungs fill up with air?

child lung     When you breathe, air is pulled into little sacks in your lungs called Alveoli.  These sacks look like a bunch of grapes.
allergy symptoms     Bigger particles get caught in our nose and throat and cause us to sneeze or have a runny nose.

But smaller particles get stuck in our lungs.

Take a small paper lunch bag.  Blow some air in that bag and role up the end like you are going to smash the bag.
See how much air it holds?
Now place a rock in the bag, and blow the bag up again.
Does it have as much air?
That's what happens when these tiny particles get into our lungs.
Now imagine that the bag is one of your alveoli.  How would the rock feel in your lungs?   Heavy?  Is the rock rough?  Do you think it might scrape the sides of your alveoli?

You or some of your friends may have Asthma.  Asthma is a problem with the little sacks in your lungs.
Imagine that the skin of the tiny sacks is sore or swollen, like when you get a rug burn.  Now imagine that you are rubbing sand into that rug burn.  That's what happens when people have asthma and tiny particles get into their lungs.
