The air in your home is 2 to 100 times more polluted than the air outdoors. In fact, the American College of Allergists says that 50% of illnesses are either caused by, or aggravated by polluted indoor air.  Substances in your home can cause cancer, nervous system problems, respiratory irritation, and birth defects.

Ironically, part of the problem is our efforts to be energy efficient.  By sealing off our houses and workspaces, we have created a situation where once pollutants are introduced to our indoor air, they remain in increasingly concentrated amounts. In fact, studies have shown that levels of pesticides are higher indoors than outdoors.

Combine this phenomenon with the fact that many of us have indoor pets.  But even if we don't have pets, there are plenty of biological sources of indoor air pollution.  Dustmite excreta is a problem especially in bedrooms.   Humans also "shed" skin particles into the environment.  And then there are the chemicals released from cleaning products, carpeting, and dry-cleaned clothing.  Without significant ventilation and/or air cleaning, all of these substances become trapped indoors, accumulating over time.

Asthma, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, Legionnaires disease, and humidifier fever have a direct link to specific building problems. Besides these conditions, there are many symptoms that we suffer that are related to indoor air pollution, including:

  • Headaches
  • Dry or burning mucous membranes
  • Irritated eyes
  • Coughing and sneezing
  • Drowsiness and fatigue
  • Nose and throat irritations
  • Dry or burning mucous membranes
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue or lethargy
  • Irritability
  • Forgetfulness

But there are elements of indoor air pollution that can cause more severe and varied symptoms.  For instance, the symptoms for airborne mold include:

Depression

Allergic Rhinitis

Muscle Aches

Sleep Disorders

Tiredness Sinus Problems Loss of Appetite Headaches
Skin Rashes Eye Irritation Chronic Nasal Congestion Coughing
Ear Aches Irritability Confusion Asthma
Wheezing Fever Chills Fatigue
Hay Fever Weight Loss

Symptoms associated with airborne lead include:

Diminished I.Q

Irritability Sleep Disturbance Behavioral Changes
Developmental Regression Memory Loss Clumsiness Muscular Aches
Abdominal Pain Vomiting

All of these factors have caused the EPA to rank indoor air pollution among the top five environmental risks to public health.

What Can You Do To Protect Yourself and Your Family?

The American Lung Association and the Environmental Protection Agency recommend three steps for protecting yourself from air-borne irritants.
air pollutionStep 1: Eliminate the pollution source.  This is the best solution, but this is not always possible.  What if your pet is the cause of your allergies?  Are you prepared to remove all the carpeting, drapes, upholstered furniture. from your home?  Even common household items such as personal care and cleaning products may cause indoor air pollution.
air pollutionStep 2: Ventilate.  Buildings need a certain amount of fresh air brought in.  Unfortunately, fresh air may not be so "fresh."  It often contains car and truck exhaust, pesticides and other pollution particulates.  Many allergens like dust, pollen and molds may be brought indoors as well.
air pollutionStep 3
: Filter Your Air.  This step is the only way you have of ensuring the quality of your indoor air.  With an air cleaner, you can make sure that troublesome particulates are removed from the air you and your family breathe.
