Does It Seem Like Your Allergies And Asthma Are Getting Worse? They probably are.
According to the American Lung Association, by 2005, 3 out of 5 people will suffer respiratory difficulty. In 1990, asthma alone cost the United States economy $6.2 billion in medical care costs, and lost time from work and school. Whenever an irritant enters the body, B cells begin producing antibody molecules called IgE. These antibodies attach themselves to mast cells which spew out inflammatory chemicals like histamine. When this happens in the upper airways, nothing more happens than a runny nose. But when the particles are smaller than 2.5 microns, they are drawn deeper into the lungs, causing the bronchioles to react to the histamine by swelling and filling with mucus, making them less able to hold air. Even the most brief exposure to pollutants can impair lung functions. While these impairments are usually temporary, over time, damage is done. One study showed that when people are exposed to elevated ozone levels for several days, that their loss of lung function continued for a week after exposure, suggesting that cell death may have been involved, instead of simply reflex airway constriction. Lifetime exposure to air pollution may prematurely age the lungs as scar tissue makes the lungs less elastic and efficient. But outdoor air pollution isn't the main problem. In fact, outdoor air pollution has declined in many areas. The real problem is indoor air pollution. We spend 90% of our time indoors, and here is where we get are largest doses of exposure to pollutants. In fact, the air indoors is 2 to 100 times more polluted than the air outdoors. In fact, 10 percept of asthma case are job related. More about Indoor Air Pollution
